  • We cannot change “photoshop” reality, he told youngsters.
  • In the afternoon, the Holy Father celebrated the Holy Mass at Las Palmas Air Base.

Lima, January 21, 2018.- Today, on his last day of apostolic journey to Peru, Pope Francis began his pastoral day in the city of Lima, visiting the shrine of the Lord of Miracles, in the temple of the Nazarene, praying for the relics of the Peruvian saints and meeting with the Peruvian youngsters to pray the Angelus in the main square of Lima.

Pope Francis left the Apostolic Nunciature and arrived at the temple of the Nazarene past 9.00 in the morning. There, he held a meeting with the religious of the various monasteries of contemplative life (cloister). In the main nave of the temple, he was able to see the original image of the Lord of Miracles, painted by an Angolan slave in 1651, the same one that survived a devastating earthquake.

After this visit, the Pope boarded the popemobile and went down a few blocks towards the Cathedral of Lima, where he offered a prayer for the relics of the Peruvian saints: Saint Rose of Lima, Saint Martin de Porres and Saint Toribio de Mogrovejo.

Each time he went from one place to another, His Holiness was accompanied by thousands of people, who waited along the different streets of downtown Lima to greet him.

Meeting with the bishops of Peru

After this activity, accompanied by the Cardinal and Archbishop of Lima, Juan Luis Cipriani, he entered the Archbishop’s Palace, located a few meters from the Basilica. In this place, he had a meeting with the bishops of Peru.

During this meeting, he was welcomed by the President of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference (CEP), Monsignor Salvador Piñeiro, who said, “We will always be grateful for the immediate decision taken during the recent visit Ad Limina, when we asked you to include Peru in your schedule, a country that currently suffers from corruption but that has faith,” said Piñeiro.

Praying with the Peruvian youth

At midday, he went up to the balcony of the archbishop’s palace to pray the Angelus along with thousands of youngsters and believers in the main square of Lima.

He told the young people that “… digitally arranged photos are very nice to look at, but that only works with photos; we cannot «photoshop» others, reality or us”. He encouraged them to keep on going when they find themselves in situations that can leave them “out of the worldcup”.

Francis offered the Angelus to the people who suffer violence in the Republic of Congo.

Mass at Las Palmas Air Base

After these activities, the Pope went to the Nunciature and, in the afternoon, he will go to Las Palmas air base to celebrate the Holy Mass, where an estimated attendance of more than one million believers is expected.

With this, Pope Francis will complete his pastoral journey to Peru.
