Lima January 18, 2018.- Pope Francis arrived in Lima, the capital of Peru, to meet the Peruvian people in the framework of a pastoral visit that will last until Sunday, January 12th. The visit includes the cities of Puerto Maldonado (Madre de Dios), Trujillo (La Libertad) and Lima.
The Holy Father landed at Air Base No. 8 at 17.20 Peruvian time and was received at the foot of the plane by the President of the Republic of Peru, Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, the First Lady, Nancy Lange, the Cardinal Primate of Peru, Juan Luis Cipriani, and the President of the Peruvian Episcopal Conference, Monsignor Salvado Piñero.
During the welcome ceremony, His Holiness received flowers from a couple of children and was able to listen to some Peruvian themes interpreted by the Symphonic Orchestra of Peru. Likewise, 21 cannon shots were fired as part of the military honours to the Head of the Vatican State.
FIRST TRIP OF THE POPE IN PERU
After the welcome ceremony at the air baseNo. 8, the Pope boarded his closed vehicle to be transported to Brasil Avenue, where he climbed onto the popemobile for his first trip in Peruvian territory and head to the Apostolic Nunciature, located on Salaverry Avenue, in the district of Jesus Maria.
THE HOME OF THE POPE IN PERU
At the Nunciature, Pope Francis had an encounter with the crowd that was waiting for him since the early hours of the morning. Francis will rest there every day after returning from his visits to the cities of Puerto Maldonado and Trujillo, where he will follow a busy agenda.
“Thank you for coming, thank you from my heart. Now, I would like to bless you all, your families and whoever is in your heart. Let us pray together to the Virgen,” expressed the Pope, evidently moved, before entering the Nunciature.
THE LAST VISIT OF THE POPE
Since the 80s, no Pope had step on Peruvian soil. Peru has changed a lot since then, in economic, social and religious terms. The country that will receive Pope Francis is not the same one that embraced Saint John Paul II in 1985 first, and later in 1988 during his second apostolic trip.
